PFAS - Information and Current Situation
What are PFAS?
PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) are a large group of chemical substances that have been used in many industrial and everyday applications due to their special properties, such as resistance to water, grease and dirt. These include, among others, firefighting foams, textiles and technical products.
PFAS are highly persistent and break down only very slowly in the environment. They are therefore subject to increasing scientific scrutiny and stricter regulation.
PFAS were neither manufactured at the site nor used as a process substance for the storage of crude oil. In the past, PFAS-containing firefighting foams were used during mandatory firefighting exercises in accordance with their approval and applicable regulatory requirements.
